Dot MOBI Domain Name Registrations

More and more people use mobile gadgets to access the Internet, so the demand for mobile-friendly websites is steadily increasing. To meet this demand, the establishment that manages the gTLDs, ICANN, established the .MOBI extension in 2005. The first registrations were allowed in September 2006, and the idea behind this extension is that all websites that use it must comply with certain rules. In other words, all .MOBI websites are required to be designed to be opened correctly by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” drawn by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in collaboration with the dot MOBI Registry organization. These incorporate how a site is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), etc.

The restrictions have provoked some concerns considering the fact that the universal top-level domain name extension is the only one that specifies what devices has to be able to access a website and the way in which this must happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a website should be designed in such a way as to be accessed by the majority of Internet browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
