Set up in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level domain extension is the single TLD planned for personal websites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are known by. At first, only 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you wished to purchase john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered third-level names remained functional.
